Overview

Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Chamoli and is known for its exquisite floral species. Sprawled over an area of 975 sq km, it has been named after the Kedarnath Temple, which lies on its northern border. Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary is the largest protected area in the region of the Western Himalayas. It is best known for the endangered musk deer, and is thus called the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary. The sanctuary is endowed with stunning natural beauty. You can get amazing views of valleys, forests, grasslands, glaciers, along with those of colourful flowers, butterflies, etc. Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary falls on the trekking route from Gauri Kund to the Kedarnath Temple. The sanctuary is rich in fauna and one can find animals like snow leopards, Indian leopards, jackals, Himalayan black bear, yellow-throated marten, red fox, etc. Some of the popular avifauna are snow partridge, Himalayan monal, Koklass pheasant, little-pied flycatcher, grey-cheeked warbler, West Himalayan bush warbler, etc.

By Bus

National Highway 58 from New Delhi passes through the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand via Meerut, Roorkee, Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Ukhimath, and is further connected by Chopta State Highway.

By Air

The closest airport is Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport, located 227 km from Chopta (the entry point for the wildlife sanctuary).

By Rail

The nearest railhead is at Rishikesh, which is located 212 km from Chopta.

Chandrashila

Chandrashila is the peak of the ridge hosting the famous Tungnath temple. It literally means "Moon Rock". It is located at a height of about 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) above sea level. This peak provides enchanting vistas of the Himalayas, including Nandadevi, Trisul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba peaks. There are various legends associated with this place. Chandrashila treks are one of the most popular treks among trekkers seeking the beauty of nature sans the crowd.

Gaurikund is the commencement point of the trek of 16 kms to the sacred shrine of Kedarnath. It is situated at an elevation of 1,982 mts above sea level. The place is named after Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva and a temple Gauri is also situated here. The place offers vivid greenery with Vasuki Ganga flowing from below. It is located amidst lush green forest offering serene environs and panoramic views.

Guptakashi, Gupta Kashi or Guptkashi is a fairly large town located at an elevation of 1,319 metres (4,327 ft) in the Kedar-khanda (khanda means sector), in Garhwal Himalayas of Rudraprayag district in Uttrakhand, India. It is known for its ancient Vishwanath Temple dedicated to the god Shiva, which is similar to the one. The main temple of Guptkashi is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Vishwanath - "Lord of the Universe".

Surrounded by dense forests and mountains, the temple offers a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. Devotees visit this temple to seek blessings and inner peace amidst nature.

Madhyamaheshwar or Madmaheshwar is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva, located in the Goundar village of Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. Situated at an elevation of 3,497 m (11,473.1 ft), it is one of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit, comprising five Shiva temples in the Garhwal region. The middle (madhya) or belly part or navel (nabhi) of Shiva, is worshipped at this temple, believed to be built by the Pandavas.

The temple is dedicated to Nag Devta and can be reached by trekking 1 km uphill from Saari village towards Devariya Tal. The temple architecture resembles the other famous temples in Uttarakhand such as Kedarnath and Tungnath in terms of mandap and garbhgriha. Inside the sanctum sanctorum, there is a lingam with a copper coiled around it which resembles a Naag (snake).

Rudranath is the highly revered temple of Lord Shiva is peacefully adorned in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is the fourth temple to visit in the circuit of Panch Kedar pilgrimage. The celestial temple is snuggled inside the rhododendron forests and the alpine meadows. The exhilarating trek to Rudranath temple can be either commenced from Sagar village, Helang or Urgam village.

Sari Village is a scenic hamlet at a distance of about 20 km before Chopta hill station. The village is enclosed by oak and rhododendron trees and resides calmly in the lap of the Himalayas. Sari village or Saari Gaon is the base camp for a very beautiful lake Deorial Tal which is only 2.5 kilometers away from here. Many times when all the hotels in Chopta are closed due to snowfall, then you can get hotels and homestays in Sari Region for your stay.
